“Razor Behavior: An Explanation” by Gina Mobilio

On February 27, 2013 I am releasing a 9-track album entitled “Razor Behavior.” Understandably, people have had some questions about the name. Here are my thoughts on the name and what it means to me. You don’t have to agree with me, in fact, I urge you to come up with your own ideas about it, if you feel so compelled, or if you care. I also understand if you don’t care—- really and truly. We’re all trying to get kids fed, bills paid, American Idol watched, etc. We’re all busy busy people and I hope for the sake of humanity the meanings behind album titles aren’t high at the top of people’s to-do lists. Thanks for reading if you are, in fact, reading. :)

Imagine, if you will, two bulldozers stationed in a cornfield, engaged in a chicken fight to the death. They aim their massive grills and headlight eyes at each other, back up slowly in reverse to ensure a forceful and clear acceleration, rev their engines and speed off mercilessly at each other, until a full on collision is met. Neither vehicle survives the attack, and both fixtures are reduced to shards of broken glass, bent metal and spilled oil. One is on fire, another seeps mud out of every imaginable vent.

This is where Razor Behavior begins.

Among the bulldozer corpses lay the fallen corn stalks, the cut up earth, the hoovering fragrance of gasoline, the worms displaced, the crows crying high in the surrounding trees. Razor Behavior is the unintentional destruction following an intentional destructive act. So often we set out seeking harm and disarray, seeking justice, seeking revenge—-sometimes unknowingly. We are human and not built for perpetual sweet apple pie behavior. But when we ourselves fall due to our own misconduct, sometimes coupled with a lover following the same lead, we are sure to uproot the world in some capacity.

Our unintentional destruction is usually subtle and quiet— like the drip of a faucet or a stray eyelash on a cheek. Slippery, naked and razor-thin. But it is always present, always rippling. It’s there if you search for it. But who wants to hear the dirty truth, I mean, honestly?

2012 -- Top Ten

Hello friends.

Last year I celebrated new years in Atlantic City with my brother Frankie and buddy Ryan. Since none of us are real gamblers or even know what the hell to do at most of the tables, we spent a lot of time wandering around the casinos, wishing we were clever enough to think of a prank stealth enough to not be detected by the thousands of security cameras lining the walls, and giggling at the idea of ending the night at the seediest strip joint in town (we didn’t). Ryan and I played a couple hands (or rounds? Not really sure of the terminology) of Black Jack while my brother sat at a slot machine stool and silently wrote on a piece of scratch paper, appearing to be submerged in thought . When I walked over to him and asked what he was doing, he told me he was writing his “Top Ten” of 2011. He said it was a list of his personal highlights throughout the year. I remember being so touched over the sentimentality my little brother displayed, now a grown man with hopes and dreams and triumphs, failures and victories. I made a thought-bubble vow to do the same the following year. Thank you Frankie for your inspiration and for the joy you bring me. So hear it is…. My best moments of 2012:

10.) Summer weekend trip to PA—-Eating shrimp & clams, Knoebels Amusement Park, Sunday morning flea market, waterfalls. I developed a new freedom of material things and letting go of stress and worry on that journey, and am very grateful for the time and person I experienced that with.

9.) Moving to Astoria from Bedstuy—-Finally live in a safe neighborhood, have darling roommates I adore, and NO MORE G TRAIN! My current room is much smaller than the one I had in Bedstuy, but I don’t have many things anyway, nor do I require much space.

8.) My birthday party—- Karaoke with a bunch of my closest and dearest friends in a private room— laughing and singing in tune and not in tune, and who the hell really cares anyway? :)

7.) Playing with Charles (guitarist) and Ben (pianist) for the first time on the Checkerboard Kids Program, and every time thereafter. Two musical giants, lending me their talents to help me follow my dreams. I am so blessed to have them in my lives and grateful they support my music.

6.) Performing at the 2012 Winter Antifolk Festival, accompanied by one of my dearest friends, Brook. I remember the skirt I wore—- layers and layers of black tulle, flowers in my hair.

5.) The entire month of December.

4.) Sitting on the beach, in the sand with my beautiful friend Carolina at Fire Island, and the conversation we had. Such an honest day.

3.) Niagara Falls in July.

2.) Recording my first album, “Razor Behavior,” soon to be completed. Something I never dreamed I could do. Something I’m still not convinced really happened.
